If you’ve spent much time in a small town, you learn something pretty quick.
It’s not just that everybody knows everybody.
It’s that certain ways of thinking get passed around just as fast.
It’s Not the Town… It’s the Thinking
This isn’t really about small towns.
I’ve seen the same thing in bigger places too.
Different faces.
Different buildings.
Same mindset.
Small thinking.
What That Looks Like
It shows up as:
Acting like you’ve got things figured out… while refusing to even consider you might not.
Holding tight to tradition… not because it’s biblical, but because it’s familiar.
Looking at others through a microscope… while giving yourself a pass.
Calling something “truth”… when it’s really just preference dressed up to sound important.
When It Starts Doing Damage
This isn’t just an observation.
I’ve seen what it does.
I know people who’ve been hurt by it.
Not slightly bothered—hurt deep.
Families strained.
People walking away discouraged.
Some just quietly stepping back because they got tired of being measured against standards that don’t even line up with Scripture.
And yeah…
I’ve felt it too.
How It Plays Out
It usually follows the same pattern.
Someone starts asking questions.
Looking a little deeper.
Trying to grow.
And instead of being met with conversation…
They’re met with suspicion.
Labeled.
Watched.
Talked about.
Not because they’re causing harm…
But because they’re making people uncomfortable.
Comfort vs Truth
Here’s something I’ve learned the hard way.
Some people don’t resist things because they’re wrong.
They resist them because it challenges what they’ve settled into.
And when comfort gets challenged…
It doesn’t always respond well.
What Scripture Actually Points To
When you look at how Jesus dealt with people…
He didn’t spend His time protecting systems.
He confronted hearts.
He called out outward religion that looked right…
but missed what mattered underneath.
And the early believers?
They weren’t building a reputation.
They were living something real—together, daily, openly.
Where I Land Now
I’m not writing this to take shots.
I’m writing it because I’ve seen it too many times to pretend it’s not there.
And because I know there are people reading this who’ve dealt with the same thing.
Felt it.
Carried it.
Maybe still sorting through it.
Something Worth Holding On To
If you’ve been on the receiving end of that kind of thinking…
Don’t let it define your faith.
Don’t let it convince you that what you experienced is what faith is supposed to look like.
It’s not.
A Different Direction
Faith was never meant to be about control.
It was never meant to be about keeping people in line.
It was meant to be lived.
Honest.
Growing.
Rooted in truth—but not afraid to examine itself along the way.
Final Thought
Small towns don’t create small thinking.
But they sure can expose it.
The real question is…
Are we willing to recognize it—
or are we just going to keep passing it along?
